- Review your permits meticulously (regardless of whether you pull it or the contractor pulls it). 

- On your permit submission paperwork:  Heights, depths, purposes of a new addition, etc, really do matter and different Hampton Roads cities have different zoning rules and regulations.  (The differences vary significantly with some cities being more stringent than others.) You must be in complete agreement with the contractor before submission or run the risk of having to re-apply (which will cost YOU additional fees).
