While there are literally hundreds of reputable remodeling contractors in Hampton Roads, we recommend you "measure twice and cut once" when it comes to selecting the right contractor for your remodeling project.   

Whether you live in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, or any of the surrounding cities, there are few investments, short of purchasing a new home or car, that necessitate more caution and due dilligence on your part.  

Before meeting with local contractors, here are a few tips JobSiteJoe recommends:

- Verify contractor is licensed and insured 
- Ask to see photos of past remodeling jobsites
- Ask for references, including phone numbers
- Check the business's local reputation with the Better Business Bureau of Hampton Roads (http://www.hamptonroadsbbb.org/) and other online resources like www.AngiesList.com
- Get everything in writing, including any drawn plans, and ensure that you and the contractor are in complete agreement with the scope of work
- Verify who will be pulling permits with your city
- Have a payment plan for each stage of completion and do not pay too much up front as a downpayment (no more than 15%)
- Expect what you inspect -- If you don't periodically check the contractor's workmanship or see something that appears odd or not in accordance with your understanding of the scope of work and don't point it out to the lead contractor, you may find that your remodeling project moves down the wrong (and much more expensive) track
- Be flexible.   Depending on the part of your home being remodeled, you may have an extended family for an extended period of time. 
- On that note, ensure you and your contractor have a clear understanding of daily clean-up routines and which parts of your home are off-limits
